Ending the Revolving Door Syndrome

Does this sound familiar?

  • Our good employees are leaving the company as quickly as we train them.
  • We’re stressed out from being understaffed.
  • We’re losing too many people.

What can companies do to keep good people? Lets get started with these 5 ideas:

1. Make people feel included

Do you hear your coworkers saying, Our leaders are always in meetings and inaccessible. They dont include us in decisions that affect us and our customers/members. Solicit coworkers for their ideas on improving the work environment, inter-departmental relations, and procedures. Report your findings and watch how the changes can affect morale!

2. Use both constructive feedback and positive reinforcement

I’ve learned from research that good people are ridiculed just because they have constructive ideas on how to improve their department or company. People need to give both positive recognition and constructive feedback to get good results. Good morale is built when people are told theyre doing a good job and what they can do to do even better. Try writing a note a week to a coworker especially when someone took risks, calmed an irate customer, or attended a workshop.

3. Make the environment as productive as possible

  • Partner new employees with veteran staff members so they can learn from each other. This stops the we vs. they syndrome.
  • Find the teams greatest assets and weakest links. Ask what team members need from each other and other departments in order to be successful. Then watch the team soar!
  • Learn a technique called Be Direct with Respect®. It encourages people to tell others what they need to hear, not necessarily what they want to hear. Be Direct with Respect® is done in a positive manner to build rapport and relationships.
  • - Create a boost the morale committee. Hold theme days, hold a talent contest, pipe in music, but most of all FIRST find out what the department members consider fun!

4. Food works

The diversity of the workforce has introduced us to a variety of customs and delicious food, which encourages people to learn about each other. Take a coworker out to lunch when he does something special and of course, everyone always appreciates birthday cake.

5. Awards make people feel great

Suggest giving awards for perfect attendance, the best attitude, the employee who grew professionally, the safest department, the most enthusiastic team, the most organized department/desk, or even the person who brings in the best snacks. These small gestures help people feel special and invested in their place of work.

Conclusion

Companies must motivate employees or fall behind in the marketplace so join my clients in stopping your revolving door today!

5 Important Secrets Of A Great Leader

If you were not naturally handed the characteristics of a good leader, you must learn to fake it! In fact, most people already have at least a couple of the most basic qualities of a good leader; they just do not have the confidence in themselves to let it come out naturally. Learning exactly what makes a good leader can help anyone, no matter how timid, become an effective leader in the workplace as well as in their personal life.

In most situations, having strong leadership skills will give you the winning edge. If you fully embrace the qualities of a good leader, they will enhance every part of your life from winning that big promotion to dealing with friends.

How can you learn what makes a good leader and turn yourself into one? Here are five known characteristics of a good leader that you can implement into your own life today.

Keep A Positive Attitude

While this is among the most necessary qualities of a good leader, many people will struggle with making it a part of their life. A warm smile is a good start. What makes a good leader successful is a warm, enthusiastic attitude that looks at the bright side of life. If you are friendly and approachable, others will feel more drawn to you. If you want others to follow you, a positive outlook and a dose of excitement for life become essential characteristics of a good leader.

Watch Your Actions

What makes a good leader successful while others fail is usually their daily actions. Never expect others to obey rules you routinely break yourself, or to listen to your advice when you ignore it yourself. What makes a good leader successful in many common circumstances is their leading example of acceptable actions.

Boost Your Confidence

While it is one of the essential qualities of a good leader, it is nearly impossible to pretend you have it. Many people will not rely upon someone who has no idea where they are headed or appears very uncertain. Regardless of how confused you might be sometimes, what makes a good leader is the perception of certainty. Bottom line, what makes a good leader worthy of trust and power is their calm, controlled behaviour even in unpleasant situations.

The Guidelines of Proper Management

Managerial skills are not all that different from some of the characteristics of a good leader. Delegating a task to ensure that the main goal is accomplished is part of being a leader. Motivating others to do what you ask of them is at the core of the most effective leadership qualities, and that is accomplished by maintaining that positive, cheerful attitude.

Setting Strict Standards

You must insist upon the best not only out of others, but of yourself. The secret here is to make others believe in themselves, so they will deliver the best of their abilities. The strong points of each person need to be utilized so the team is as successful as possible.

Overall, what makes a good leader is essentially a healthy dose of self confidence, and the skill to pass that confidence on to others so they also achieve their best. Most people aren’t naturally self assured, but it can be earned with some serious focus.

Hiring Right

How do you get the right people?

As a small business, attracting talent can be a challenge. You probably cannot compete on price because like every other start up, you have to keep a tight rein on overheads.

What else can you do to attract good people? There are several strategies for attracting talent. The first step is selecting the right people.

Selecting the right people is as much an art as a science. In order to get the right person, you have to do some work.

You need to be clear on what the person is expected to do. You have to take the time to prepare a job description. Not a generic document but one that contains your well thought out list of duties that you expect the person to carry out on a daily basis.

From this job description, you will be able to decide on the necessary skills and background required. Here, you would be looking at personality traits as well as experience and academic background. For example, you ask a potential accountant about tax issues, if they don’t have the correct answer but know how to find the answer, that shows that they can use their initiative.

Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten

Quality is a word that is bandied around quite a bit. What does quality mean to you? In our businesses, we tend to say that what makes us different or our USP is our quality. Quality of product and quality of customer services are the most used.

But if everybody is offering great quality then who is offering bad quality?

Great Quality is indeed a standard to aspire to in order to build and sustain a business. Whatever your product or service, there must be a dimension of quality that can be built into it in order to have happy customers.

So how do we define quality?

One of the dictionary meanings of quality is “An inherent or distinguishing characteristic; a property”

How does this translate to your business?

I would say, quality is what your customer wants. It is not what you think is quality that matters, it is what your customer thinks and perceives as quality that matters.

Ask your customers and prospects what they want from your product or services.  What is the distinguishing characteristic of your product or service that they appreciate? What other properties would be useful to them?

Remember,  “ Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten”

Motivation and Improving Focus

Goals are essential for all of us. An agenda in life helps us direct our energy and stamina towards realizing a goal. Career goals need to have a self motivated effect. There are many perks and hand holding offered by corporate houses in backing their team. The team leader has to have a high level of objectivity with daily goals that go on to realize the main goal as laid by the corporate achievements.

Focus again is important. Distractions lead us to nowhere. For a student the goal of academics has to be sought with lot of determination. Though breaks are essential to alter the seriousness of any situation, the effort should not be diluted. Academics are getting competitive and children should be motivated by peers and heed the guidance of teachers.

Corporate goals are about a company’s targets. Targets relate to the standing of the company in economic circle and also are about reputation.

Concentration is required even in sports. If you need to achieve the goal for your foot ball team then practicing is very important. Irrespective of any hindrances it becomes important to reach the finishing line first for an athlete. Games are the best way to understand goals. A good coach helps you to fine tune your demerits and also coaches you to be a winner.

For leading a team one has to be highly motivated. Motivation comes from inspiration. We can be inspired by our parents, our grandpa or also peers in the office. There is no substitute for hard work. Losing focus will only take us to the downturn and hence we must minimize all sorts of distractions. A simple sense of motivation can be realized when a toddler stumbles during his first steps and braces again to take another step. For motivation self esteem should be improved.

A clear thought process leads us towards realizing our goals. There is a lot of homework, research and also guidance seeking that enhances our skills. Motivation when we have a satisfaction within us. Scope for improvement and acknowledging loop holes is also conducive for improving focus.

Personality Profiling as an Employee Assessment Tool

Our personalities are the unique ways we think, feel, and act – the way we are wired to respond. Everyone has a unique personality that motivates him.

Almost everyone responds to life’s challenges and choices according to his or her personality. Therefore, individuals who relate to others must be personality wise.

The foundation of personal and professional success lies in understanding yourself, understanding others, and realizing the impact of personal behavior on others.

Employers having an understanding of their employee’s behavioural pattern from their personality profiling, can better build elite teams by bringing people with complimentary personalities together; provide direct training to employees’ specific requirements thus maximizing investment in human capital development.”

Placing the right person in the right job obviously makes a difference. Hiring the right personality for a specific job is imperative. Stress occurs in every job. The level of pressure can be directly related to the employee’s personality in relations to his or her job demands.

“A lot of work place conflict comes from personality clash and peoples expectations, which are a result of their values and their priority”

NO ONE HAS A BAD PERSONALITY; the most important factor is what you do with your personality
